Including cars in your selection of photographs on Tinder is nothing new, but the implications of doing so has been a hotly debated subject since the app was launched nearly half a decade ago.
It's a divisive topic – along with other Tinder mainstays such as sedated tigers, faceless abdomens and pouty bikini selfies, cars are something that are a clear turn-off for some people, and a window into someone's personality for others.
But recent 'research' shows that it goes deeper than that. Specifically, certain models of car have been shown to elicit a more positive response on the app than others. An Audi A4, for example, appears to make a Tinder user appear more attractive than, say, a Nissan Micra.
The survey, undertaken by Confused.com, involved a male and female volunteer setting up a total of 36 bogus Tinder profiles, each with a photograph of them standing next to a certain model of car, and swiping a total of 72,000 times.
The results showed that a man looking for a female partner is best off with an Audi A4 featured prominently in his profile, while a woman looking for a male partner will get most matches if she's photographed next to a Ford Focus.
A man looking for a same-sex partner should choose a Ford Fiesta, though, while a woman looking for a female match is most likely to succeed with a Nissan Micra.
Some of the least appealing cars included Seat's sensible supermini, the Ibiza, and its close relative the Volkswagen Polo. Women seemed least interested in a man near a stylish and sophisticated Renault Megane, while the same guy standing next to a Peugeot 307 was a turn-off for potential male partners.
Curiously, when the female volunteer was photographed next to a Focus she was nigh-on irresistable to members of the opposite sex, but a huge turn-off to other women – just one female profile swiped right to her when she was standing next to the Ford.
