Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and Liam Gallagher are among the major artists in the running for this year's Brit Awards – but young British pop singer-songwriter Dua Lipa leads the pack with the most nominations.

The 22-year-old, whose self-titled debut album has sold more than a million copies worldwide, has been nominated in five categories for the music awards, which take place next month.

“I feel like this year has been so special for so many British artists leaving their mark on the world and I can’t believe I’ve been nominated for one, let alone five Brit Awards. This is so surreal and exciting, and I’m so thankful for the recognition,” she said.

Dua Lipa, Foo Fighters, Sam Smith and Stormzy will all perform at the ceremony, which will be hosted by comedian Jack Whitehall and broadcast live on ITV from 6pm on February 21.

The full shortlist, revealed today, is chosen by a voting academy of more than 1,000 music industry professionals, with the public invited to vote for the winner in two categories – Artist Video of the Year and British Breakthrough Act.

Since the first Brit Awards in 1977, previous winners have included Queen, the Beatles and Arctic Monkeys.
