Voices which transcend time

It is the vice of every generation to think its own achievements and heroes to be unique. That is often mistaken, especially when it comes to art. Yet some artists do matter beyond their own era, as current events remind us.

Chuck Berry has died at the age of 90. Dame Vera Lynn, meanwhile, celebrates her 100th birthday today. Berry, quite simply, gave the world rock and roll: without him, we might have had no Beatles, no Rolling Stones and the world today would sound very different, and more drab.

As for Dame Vera, she gave voice to Britain’s struggle for freedom in the Second World War. These are voices that transcend generations, and will sound down the ages.
