Letters: The Tories’ care reforms are a price worth paying for a fairer society

Theresa May presents the Conservative manifesto in Halifax

SIR – Well done Theresa May. There are too many people getting money from the state that they don’t need and often don’t want. Our social care services are in dire straits and the money to improve them has to come from somewhere.

I’m a pensioner and a carer but can manage without the winter fuel payment.

Would I trust Mrs May with my housekeeping money? You bet.

SIR – Means-testing the winter fuel payment will be divisive, and no doubt require a team of bureaucrats to administer it. It would be better to make the benefit taxable and let HMRC do the work.

Better still, amalgamate the winter fuel allowance and Christmas bonus into the state pension and redeploy the administrators of those schemes to more productive work.

This will ensure that needy pensioners are protected and wealthier pensioners are taxed appropriately.
