Neighbours fans received some troubling news this week, with reports claiming the Australian soap could disappear from British screens if the makers failed to reach a new deal with the show's UK broadcaster.

"The renegotiation of the Neighbours Channel 5 deal has become very fraught and is in jeopardy. Channel 5 really want to keep the show," an alleged insider told the Sunday People.

"But the failure to reach a deal is being blamed on Channel 5’s new American owners Viacom for refusing to sign off on the figures and not understanding the cultural importance of the show in the UK.

"Neighbours has become a British TV favourite and it would be a sad day if it were to go."

To distract Neighbours-lovers from this troubling prospect, here's a brief run-down of a few of the (many) celebs who've appeared on the soap over the years.

1. Clive James

The writer and broadcaster appeared as a postman in a 1996 episode. When asked about it years later, he described the cameo as "the biggest audience I've ever reached" - and paid tribute to Neighbours creator Reg Grundy for seeing that Ramsey Street's red brick bungalow cul-de-sac was the “desiderata that everybody in the world wanted”.

2. Paula Abdul

The singer - and judge on So You Think You Can Dance Australia - checked into Lassiters for an episode in 2014, much to the excitement of Dr Karl Kennedy.

3. Lily Allen

Another celebrity run-in for Dr Karl, who had an on-air chat with Lily when she appeared on a local radio station in a 2009 episode.

4. Chris Lowe

The Pet Shop Boy showed up in 1995, stopping to ask Annalise and Helen Daniels for directions to a nearby recording studio.

5. Matt Lucas and David Walliams

The Little Britain duo appeared as their Lou and Andy characters in a 2007 episode, cropping up in a scene in the Scarlet Bar alongside Harold and Toadfish.

6. Derek Nimmo

In a 1990 episode the actor played Lord Ledgerwood, an eccentric aristocrat who hosted Madge and Harold Bishop when they visited the UK for a holiday.

7. Sinitta

Karl (him again) and Susan tied the knot on a boat on the Thames in 2007 - and Sinitta stepped in as a witness.

8. Emma Bunton

On that same London trip, Karl had been planning to propose during an open-top bus tour - but dropped the ring over the side. Luckily, the ring was found by a helpful passing Spice Girl.

It was really rather star-studded holiday for the Kennedy's, who also had run-ins with:

10. Julian Clarey

11. Jo Whiley

and

12. Neil Morrissey
